173. Salute to Volunteers | 致敬給所有默默付出的志工

Dear Volunteers and Community Leaders,

This is my open letter to you, to thank you for what you are doing to serve and help many underprivileged people in the community. I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage you to reflect and see how effectively you “Do Good, Do Well, and Multiply.” Let me elaborate:

I am sure you have focused quite a bit on “Do Good”—helping people in many different ways: caring for their health, providing needed education and training, helping immigrants assimilate into a new society, and promoting stronger business collaboration and success. I applaud you for what you have done and continue to do.

Oftentimes, volunteer work is both rewarding and demanding. You may become totally absorbed by it and work to the point of exhaustion without realizing it. This is especially true since many volunteers are retirees in their senior years. Their bodies need recovery, and their energy needs replenishment. That is why I would like to remind all volunteers to “Do Well.”

To continue being a productive volunteer, one needs an able body, a sharp mind, a bright spirit, and an open heart—for a long period of time. In essence, you must learn to take care of yourself: to pamper yourself, to make yourself happy, and to do well. Please conduct a brief self-inventory to assess how you spend time on yourself, and how you reserve time for leisure and relaxation.

In addition, you need to put extra effort into caring for your body so you can perform various tasks without the danger of falling or injuring yourself. To maintain an able body, establish a good regimen of exercise for endurance, strength, power, flexibility, and agility. Beyond physical health, it is equally important to sharpen your mind through mental and cognitive games—it can be both fun and beneficial. Only with such “Do Well” habits will you be able to sustain your energy, health, and spirit to continue the many good deeds you are doing.

And lastly, to maximize and sustain the great work you have done, you need to multiply your sphere of influence by inviting and coaching younger generations to do the same. Motivate and mentor them so you can help create new youth volunteer movements. The youth’s energy and contemporary skills will multiply the good deeds all volunteers strive to achieve. Their participation will multiply the progress and elevate the community into a new era of prosperity and human flourishing.

Again, congratulations to all volunteers—and please: Do Good, Do Well, and Multiply!

親愛的志工與社區領袖們:

這是一封寫給你們的公開信,衷心感謝你們在社區中無私付出,服務並幫助了許多弱勢族群。我也想藉這個機會,邀請大家一起思考─在「行善(Do Good)、自善(Do Well)、傳善(Multiply)」這三個面向上,自己做得如何。讓我進一步說明。

我相信,你們長期以來都致力於「行善」:以各種方式幫助他人,關懷健康、提供教育與培訓、協助新移民融入社會,並推動更緊密的商業合作與成功。我對你們過去與現在的努力深表敬意。

然而,志工服務雖然令人充實,也往往充滿挑戰。有時你可能全心投入、忙碌到身心俱疲而不自覺。這種情況在高齡志工身上尤其常見,因為體能的恢復與補充都更加重要。因此,我想提醒大家,要學會「自善」。

要成為長久而有活力的志工,需要健康的身體、敏銳的頭腦、明亮的心靈 與開放的胸懷。這意味著,我們必須懂得照顧自己、善待自己、讓自己快樂並維持良好狀態。請花一點時間檢視自己的生活:你是否也保留了屬於自己的時間,用來休閒與放鬆?此外,也要特別注意身體的保養與鍛鍊,確保自己能安全地執行各項任務。維持健康的體能,需要培養兼具耐力、力量、靈活度與敏捷度的運動習慣。同時,也別忘了透過思考與遊戲來活化大腦,這不僅有趣,也十分有益。唯有在「自善」的狀態下,才能持續保有能量、健康與熱情,長久地行善助人。

          最後,若要讓這份善意與成果持續擴大,就必須「傳善」─主動邀請並培育年輕一代一起參與。啟發他們、引導他們,讓新的青年志工運動得以萌芽。年輕人的活力與現代技能,將讓志工們的善行倍增,推動社區邁向新一波的繁榮與人文進步。

再次恭喜並感謝所有志工。
