172. An Eventful Summer |
– Musings of Dr. Jamie C. Hsu, 9.30.2025
I had an eventful summer with a lot of important and unusual things that happened and caused me to pause my blog writing. During the summer, I learned to be a caregiver, endured a major gastrointestinal problem, celebrated a fabulous big family vacation, and embarked on a journey to rebuild my health.
First, my wife went through a spinal fusion surgery to repair her arthritis damaged vertebrae and disk. The surgery went well, but I had to learn to be a caregiver for the first time, to care for her during her immobile periods. That brief few weeks experience gave me a deep appreciation of what many family and professional caregivers are going through.
Fortunately, her recovery went well enough for us to host and participate in our big family reunion in Japan and Taiwan. Over twenty-five relatives from Taiwan and the US spent two weeks sightseeing and connecting. Three generations of brothers, sisters, uncles, aunties, and cousins had a memorable time and celebrated our big birthdays together.
Amongst these big events, my digestive system experienced a major inflammation episode. It took a team of health providers 2 months to diagnose and find the cause and cure of my condition. I have learned much about the complexity and depth of modern personalized health treatment. This approach differs from misinformation, rumors, and supposed solutions often found on social media platforms.
There are so many factors impacting our health, some we have no control, such as aging, genetics, and heredity. Some we can improve, such as the living environment, our diets and exercise habits, and initiative-taking treatment and interventions. We need to be aware of all the factors. I am now diligently doing rehab and dietary adjustment to rebuild my body, so that I can continue to do valuable deeds and enjoy life to its fullest.
This surely was an eventful summer for me. I experienced and learned much about family bonding, caregiving, holistic healthy living, and the network of health providers required to cure and care for us. To all of you, I am indebted for giving me this learning and growth.
