116. Measures (KPI) of Life | 人生的指標

116. Measures (KPI) of Life |  人生的指標

– Musings of Dr. Jamie C. Hsu, 6.12.2021

In the business world, we use different metrics to assess the performance of a company, such as financial reports and KPI (key performance indicators). I wonder how we would measure our lives.

People talk about lives using terms like longevity, wealth, happiness, health, contribution, success, family, etc. Let’s take a deeper look at some of these.

Longevity and Health: Is it the goal by itself or the means to do something more? With a longer life, you can see, learn, enjoy, experience, and contribute more. That is the value of a long and healthy life.

Influence and Impact: How many lives have you touched and improved through business, volunteering, and philanthropic work? Even a small act, a kind gesture, or a timely helping hand can touch someone’s life profoundly.

Family and Descendants: Are you raising a family with loving and caring members and descendants? We play different roles throughout our lives, from being a cute baby to becoming the elder oak tree of the big family. We set the tone, character, and traditions in the family through our words, wisdom, and deeds.

Wealth and Assets: Do you accumulate wealth through hard work and smart investments? And more importantly, how are you using and distributing the wealth? Hopefully, the wealth is not being used to indulge descendants, but to do charitable and meaningful work for others in need and the good of society in general.

Memory and Legacy: How have you created memories in people’s minds and hearts? Ideally, through your kindness, deeds, mentorship, and teaching, you have created lasting memories in people’s hearts. The memories of us should bring a smile to someone’s face and encouragement during someone’s struggle.

Love: How have you loved and been loved? It is said that the more you spread and disperse love, the more you’ll accumulate and receive it, from family, friends, colleagues, and even strangers.

What are your measures of life? I hope you have found them and are striving toward them. Best wishes for a full and happy life.
