Planning for Transformational Changes

Many organizations and individuals want to go through transformational change to achieve a higher level of performance and success. They want to go beyond the mere incremental improvements of current operations, products, and capabilities. Their goals are laudable, yet many have failed to arrive at the next higher level. Why is that?

The observation I have made in my consulting and mentoring work is the following:  Often times, my clients or mentees are consumed and constrained by what they should do and what they can do with their current capability, resources, and mindset.  They forget to explore what they might do to step out of the intensely competitive “red sea,” or they don’t decide what they will do with unyielding tenacity. To guide organizations and individuals through successful transformational changes, I have used the following steps in the many strategic sessions I have facilitated:   

  1. Scan the future environment and megatrends to explore what you might do.
  2. Align these possibilities with your mission to narrow down what you should do.
  3. Assess your current and future capability to realistically determine what you can do.
  4. Look deeply inside yourself and the organization to harvest the passion and energy to decide what you will do.

In the first step, you may generate hundreds of ideas — some crazy, some audacious, some innovative, and even some foolish ones. The goal is to come up with ideas you and your competitors have not thought of.  In the next 3 steps, you will reduce this list of hundreds down to a handful which are aligned with your mission and capability, and which have the enthusiastic support of your family, friends, and colleagues.

許多組織和個人都希望透過轉型變革來實現更高水準的績效與成功。他們希望能不依循傳統漸進的方式,就能突破既有的營運、產品以及能量。儘管目標是值得讚許的,但卻有很多人無法達成。為何會如此呢?

從我以往諮詢和顧問指導經驗來看,以下是些個人的觀察:通常我的客戶或受訪者會受到既有能力、資源和思維方式的影響,限制了他們只会专注在應該做或能做的事情。他們忘了去探索自己可能做些什麼來走出競爭激烈的”紅海”,而且他們不會堅定不移地去決定做什麼事情。為了指導組織及個人成功通過轉型變革,我在我所推動的許多戰略議商中,採取了以下幾個步驟。

  1. 掃描未來環境與大趨勢的動態,探索你可能會做什麼。

  2. 將這些可能性與你的任務對齊,以縮小你應該做的事情的範圍。

  3. 評估你當下與未來的能力,確定你可以做些什麼。

  4. 深入了解自己與組織,以激情和精力來決定你要做些什麼。

在第一步中,你可能產生數百個想法,有些是瘋狂的、有些是大膽的、有些是創新的、甚至有些是愚蠢可笑的。可是这目標就是要想出你和你的競爭對手所沒有想到的創意。在接下來的三個步驟中,你可以將這數百個列表減少到最少,並且要與你的使命、能力相當;還要獲得你的家人、朋友及同事的熱烈和衷心的支持。
