My Third Retirement

This month, I am completing nine years of service on the board of Henry Ford Health System and HAP Insurance. I am also stepping down, after six years, as chair of the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission. I am passing the baton to younger generations and allowing myself to pursue other interests from my strategic to-do list. This is the third retirement in my career. It has been an interesting and rewarding journey after my two previous retirements from GM and Lawrence Tech University.
My first career in GM lasted more than 30 years. It was all automotive related: advanced manufacturing, R&D, and global technology management. In this career, through on-the-job learning and numerous training classes, I learned automotive skills and more importantly, management and leadership.
My second career as a professor of MBA was quite different. The young students and the ever-changing business world kept me on my toes. I needed to pay attention to various business matters, the latest management skills, and the most appropriate strategic concepts to prepare myself and the students for the competitive business world.
The third period of my career was primarily centered on community service in different shapes and forms. Serving on the hospital and health insurance board opened my eyes to a different world, where the interests of regulators, government, patients, doctors, and many other stakeholders all needed to be taken care of concurrently. In chairing the Michigan Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs, I had to lead people of diverse ethnicities, professions, political interests and economic backgrounds. We worked with new and old immigrants, legislators, government agencies, and many community organizations. It was a totally different experience working with volunteers without clearly defined responsibilities or authority. I learned and grew a lot during this period of community work.
Summing up my third retirement, it was rewarding to see people working together for common causes, and heartwarming to make so many new friends.

我的第三個退休

到這個月，我在福特醫療集團(Ford Health System)，以及密西根HAP Insurance非營利組織機構兩邊擔任董事的職務剛好屆滿9年。正好我也辭去已經服務了6年的密西根亞太事務委員會主席一職。我正致力於交棒給年輕的一代，並讓自己去尋找自己策略清單中其他的興趣。這算是我職涯中第三個退休；是繼前兩個分別在GM以及羅倫斯科技大學(LTU)後，另一個有趣而且富意義的人生旅程。
我第一個職涯是服務了30多年的GM公司。主要跟汽車領域有關的事业、包括是做了先進製造、产品研發、以及全球技術管理的主管。在這個職涯中，透過在職學習與諸多培訓課程，除了瞭解汽車領域的科技外，更重要的是我學習到了管理與領導的能力。
我的第二個職涯截然不同，是作為大學MBA教授。年輕學子以及瞬息萬變的商業環境，讓我時刻不敢懈怠。不但要關注各種商務時事、最新的管理技能以及最佳策略概念，才能讓自己以及學生們能夠在未來激烈的商場環境中作好準備。
我第三個職涯主要是從事各種型態及形式的社區服務。在擔任醫療及保健委員會的期間，我看到了另一個世界；在那裏，監管機構、政府單位、患者、醫生以及其他許多利害關係者的利益都需要同時照顧到。至於擔任密西根亞太地區事務委員會主席時，我則需要領导不同種族、專業、政治、經濟背景的人。我們與新舊移民、立法者、政府機構以及許多社區組織一起共事。在沒有明確的職責定位以及權限的情況下，與志工們一起共事，可以說跟過往是完全不同的經歷。在這段社區服務的工作中，我雖有所贡献，但從中學習也得到了很多。
總結我的第三次退休，很高興看到人們為了共同的理想一起打拼，更感動能因此結交到如此多新朋友。
