
Climb the Career Platform

So many times, people ask for advice on how to climb the career ladder. But do you really want to climb the ladder?
You know that the ladder is narrow and unstable. Any false move or misstep and you could tumble down. Also, other people may knock you off on their way going up or down.
The better way is to view your career as consisting of many platforms. You reach one platform, give your best to be a shining star, and then prepare yourself to ascend to the next higher platform.
While on the platform of your current job, make sure that you spend 50% of your time Doing (contributing), 50% of your time Learning (new skills), and 50% of your time Teaching (with your unique capability). Yes, I do mean 150% total. Extra work and effort are necessary to advance in your career.
To “Contribute” in a meaningful way is why you were given the job in the first place. If you can also “Teach,” that means you have a special and unique value in the team. If you have the opportunity to “Learn,” that means you’ll grow and be ready for broader responsibilities.
The best job is the one that allows you to do the 50-50-50. Try to maintain the right balance. “Doing” 100% of the time means you are consumed by the routine work. “Learning” too much means you are still a newcomer. “Teaching” too much will give you a reputation as merely a talker. The right balance will help you reach the next platform and your career aspirations. In a 30-year career, climbing 10 platforms of “Do-Teach-Learn” with 3 years on each, will give you a fun and rewarding career.

攀登事業新高: 一階再一階?

曾經有許多人為了如何在職場往上爬而前來尋求建議。但,你真的想要爬這一層層的階梯嗎?
誠如你所知道的,這層階梯不但窄且不穩,任何的錯誤動作或一個失足,都會讓你往下跌落;而其他人則可能在這條路上以不同的形式來阻擋你和拉你一起掉下来。

當你在現在的工作平台上時,要確保花上50%的時間在執行(貢獻)、50%在學習(新技能)、50%在指導(用你的特質)。別懷疑,我的確是指全部加起來150%。額外的工作與努力是職場上必須提前預備的。
所謂的”貢獻”,就是你在這份工作上被首先賦予的職責。如果你還能夠做到”指導”,就代表你在公司團隊中具備獨特的價值。倘若同時還有機會能夠”學習”,這表示你將會再成長、為未來更廣泛的責任做準備。
最好的工作就是能讓你做到上面所談的50-50-50。試著保持這樣正向的平衡吧!100%都是”執行”,說明你的時間被例行公事給消耗掉了。”學習”太多,說明你還是個新手。而”指導”太多,則會讓你落下只說不做的名聲。良好的平衡,將幫助你達成在職場上攀登更高一層平台的願望。若在30年的職涯中,攀登10個”Do-Teach-Learn”的平台,以每3年爬一層為目標,如此將可以帶給你有趣且有意義的職場生活。 準備好攀登你的事業平台了嗎?
