Mindful Living

“Where did my time go?”  “The day went by so fast.”  “I feel rushed and stressed all the time.” Those seem to be the common mutterings of people living in this modern world. We lament about the past, worry about the future, and rush through the present without savoring the moment. In some sense, we are not living a full life.

In order to see, hear, smell, taste, touch, and feel our daily experience whole-heartedly, we need to practice mindfulness in everything we do. That means “paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.” (Life Coach, Jon Kabat-Zinn).

Many meditation programs, yoga classes, and religious study groups teach us the techniques of Zen and mindfulness. All of this can and should be applied in our daily routines so we can savor every moment and live a full day, every day. 

When eating: don’t just chow down and swallow the food while reading, texting, or working. Try to smell the food, look at the color, feel the texture, and think about how the food was grown, prepared, and cooked. You’ll enjoy the meal more and feel more satisfied.

While walking: examine how your body moves, feel the contact of your feet with the ground, listen to the sound of the footsteps, sense your breathing, and feel the wind past your ears.

In conversation with others: digest their words, look into their eyes, observe their expressions, listen whole-heartedly, and feel their joy, excitement, or pain. That is how friendship is enriched.

Please make every moment count and live a mindful, full life.

“我的時間跑哪去了?”、”日子過得真快”、”我經常覺得忙碌而且壓力很大”;這些似乎已經成為活在現在這個世界的所有人的共同心聲。我們對過去感傷、為未來擔憂。结果是還沒能細細品味當下時刻,就已經匆匆穿過現在。從某種意義上來說,我們並沒能過上充實圆满的生活。

為了全心全意地看、聽、聞、嚐、觸摸,感受’到日常生活,我們需要在我們所做的一切中,去練習專注正念。這种的思考就是 “以某種特定方式、对此時此刻去刻意的專注、不帶批判,來培養注意力” (生活教練,Jon Kabat-Zinn)

許多冥想的課程、瑜珈課程、和宗教學習團體,都是教我們禪學和正念的技巧。所有的這些都可以而且應該應用在我們的正常生活中,如此一來,我們就可以品味每一刻、並且用這樣的方式過上满满的一整天。

譬如 —

  • 吃東西的時候:不要一邊吃東西,一邊閱讀、發簡訊或工作。試試看去聞聞食物、觀察顏色、感受它的質地,並且去思考這些食物是如何栽種、準備、烹調和製作的。你會因此更享受、更滿足這頓飯菜。
  • 走路的時候:檢視你的身體如何移動、感受雙腳與地面的接觸、聽聽腳步聲、去感覺你的呼吸、去感受風吹過你的耳際。你会觉得你是天地的一员。
  • 交谈說話:去消化對方的話語、觀察他們的眼神與表情、全心傾聽、感受他們的喜悅、興奮或痛苦。這就是如何让你交到更多朋友,擁有更豐富的友誼。
