4 Qs to Succeed
– Musings of Dr. Jamie C. Hsu, 1.7.2018
Mastery of the 4 Qs will make you a successful leader, valuable partner, great friend, and wonderful family member. Let’s take a look at the essential 4 Qs:
IQ: Intelligence Quotient measures our cognitive ability and other elements of intelligence. A high IQ gives you an automatic advantage. You seem to understand and grasp ideas and new concepts faster than others. You can solve problems and develop creative solutions better than others. Lucky for you.
EQ: Emotion Quotient is the ability to be aware of your own emotions and manage it under various situations. A good example is the child who can control his urge to eat candies in order to get more at a later time; or a person who can put aside her own anguish to help others. A person with high EQ is also more attuned to others’ emotions and has a better ability to handle conflicts.
CQ: Culture Quotient is the sensitivity to the culture of people and environment surrounding us. Culture is not just about nationality or ethnicity. It is also found in different professions, businesses, and even in circles of friends. A good leader and team member needs to be conscious of others’ feelings, cultural background, and idiosyncrasies in order to motivate and inspire them.
WQ: Work Quotient measures one’s ethics and attitude toward work. It is necessary for all successful people. Such leader is willing to work harder than others to accomplish a task. She is a doer, not just a talker. And she is the one others can count on and look up to.
You probably can think of many bosses who are smart and work hard to establish the business. But as the business expands and grows, his EQ and CQ begin to play more significant roles in managing his employees, suppliers, and customers. Unfortunately, many bosses fall short of these two attributes and can’t transform into a great leader. This is also true in our personal lives. In dealing with family members and friends, EQ and CQ probably play a greater role than IQ and WQ.
Please take a look at the people around you. You will see different Qs in play that shape people’s personalities, careers, and lives. I hope you are applying the 4 Qs properly to achieve success.
