
Beyond Diploma and Résumé

If you are launching your first career or switching to a new career, updating your résumé is one of the critical steps. There are many books, workshops, and seminars which give you advice on writing a high impact résumé. Of course, the content, format, and style of a résumé is important to creating a favorable first impression and getting you into the candidate pool. Once there, you need to know what employers are looking for beyond the diploma and résumé.
If they are looking for a temporary worker, the company will be most interested in your skills, coursework, knowledge, and relevant experience. But if they are looking for a long-term employee, then they will want to know you as a person — how did you accomplish the results stated in your résumé? how will you apply the skills and knowledge in a working environment? They want to know your five ABCDE traits:
A: Attitude, in dealing with issues and problems
Can you get things done in spite of difficulties and hurdles? Are you a go-getter or a chronic complainer?
B: Belief, in company missions and project objectives
Do the mission and objectives get you excited about the company and the daily work?
C: Creativity, in developing solutions
Do you have an open mind and the broad knowledge to come up with special ideas and solutions?
D: Discipline, in applying sound methods and practices
Do you shoot from the hip or gather pertinent facts? Do you use scientific and proven methodology to avoid chaos and false moves?
E: Execution, in taking care of all necessary details
Do you sweat all the details to ensure the right people are involved and the right tasks are cared for?
Please think of specific examples of how you demonstrate these attributes and can therefore be a valuable long-term employee.


履歷表之外的ABCDE

如果你是剛畢業在找工作、或是想要轉換跑道,那更新履歷表肯定是重要的關鍵步驟。坊間有很多專業書籍、工作坊、研討會等,都會提供你許多關於如何撰寫一份具有高吸引力履歷的建議。不可否認,履歷表的內容、版面、樣式都是吸引面試官目光、進入到候選名單中的重點。一旦進入了候選區,你便需要知道雇主想在你的履歷、文憑之外尋找些什麼。
如果他們正在應徵臨時雇員,面試官會對於你的技能、課程、所涉略的知識及相關工作經驗感到興趣。但若是他們要找的是正式員工,那面試官會想要知道你是個怎樣的人、你過去是如何完成履歷上所說的那些成果、你未來會如何在工作環境中應用所知的技能及知識。簡單來說,他們會要知道你的ABCDE特徵。
A代表Attitude(態度),如何面對處理事情與問題。
在困難與障礙下,你如何把事情做好?你會積極有幹勁?還是滿腹牢騷?
B代表Belief(信念),公司的使命與專案目標。
這個使命與目標是否會讓你對於身為當中一員及每天所做工作感到自豪?
C代表Creativity(創意),作為解決方案的發展。
你是否擁有開放的思考及廣泛的知識來提出特殊想法或解決方案?
D代表Discipline(專業),應用合理的方式及作法。
你是屬於不加思索、做了再說的人?還是會先花時間收集相關事證?你是否會使用科學及成熟的方法,以避免造成混亂或被假動作所蒙騙?
E代表Execution(執行),進行一切必要的細節。
你是否會為了確保合適的人參與計畫、所有工作是否都有被正確執行等細節事情而身躬其行?
想一些具體發生過的案例,用它來證明你具備這些特質,会成為一個有價值的長期員工!
