Life in a 6-day or 8-Day Week

If a magical genie came out of a bottle and granted you 8-day weeks, you would be elated with joy. Now you can finish all your piled-up work, chores, and duties. You may even have some time left to do the extra things you have always wanted and hoped to do. But what are those extra things? Do you have the list handy to submit to the genie to justify keeping this extra day in your week?

Or, imagine this scenario: You have been bad and an evil genie punishes you by taking away a day from your week. Now you have only 6 days in a week. How are you going to survive? Do you know what you can and should stop doing to live in such a shorter week?

Although you know that these two fairy tale scenarios won’t happen to you, going through this simple mental exercise will benefit you immensely.

In a shorter week, maybe you should cut down on watching TV, spend less time on social media, track fewer ball games, check the news less frequently, or play fewer electronic games.

In a longer week, maybe you’d like to have more meaningful conversations with loved ones, do some charity work, read a few good books, exercise more, or learn a new hobby.  

Once you find out what routines you can take away from your shorter weeks, and what fun things you would add to your longer weeks, you can do some trading. You now have a “fresh-eyes” approach to yourself and how you allocate your time. This will help you get out of the rut and reset the priorities in your life. Try the lives of a shorter 6-day week and a longer 8-day week and you’ll be enlightened.

倘若有個魔法精靈出現在你面前,給了你一個禮拜8天,那你肯定會很開心。因為如此一來,你便可以完成所有堆積如山的家務或工作。你甚至還有一些時間可以去做你一直想要而且期待做的事情。但這些額外的事情會是什麼呢?你是否有把它們列出成清單交給魔法精靈,以確保你的這一個禮拜可以保有這額外的一天呢?

又或者你可以想像:倘若遇到一個壞心、邪惡的精靈,他可能從你這邊拿走一天來懲罰你。果真如此,你一個禮拜只剩下6天。你又該如何自處?你又是否知道自己在相對變短的一個禮拜當中,該做些什麼?又有什麼是該停下來不做的?

儘管剛剛講的兩種假設場景都不會發生,但你可以透過類似這樣簡單的心理訓練,讓自己受益無窮。

當在較短的星期裡,你也許應該減少看電視、花更少時間在社交網路上、或者減少追球賽的時間、又或者瀏覽新聞的次數少一點、玩線上遊戲的時間也少一點。

當在較長的星期裡,你也許想跟家人有更深層的對話、或參加一些慈善活動、讀幾本好書、增加運動的次數、或者去嘗試一種新的嗜好。

一旦你找到你可以從較短星期中減少的行程,以及找到你在較長的星期中增加哪些有趣的事情,你就可以跟自己來場交易。你會開始用嶄新的視野來檢視自己、並且重新分配你的時間。這也可以幫助你擺脫困擾、重新設定自己生活中的優先事項。所以,試試看過一個只有6天的一周、以及一個有8天的一周,相信你會因此而有不同的啟發!
