161. Applying DEI to Our Health | 運用DEI在我們的健康管理上
– Musings of Dr. Jamie C. Hsu, 7.29.2024
Nowadays, the topic of DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) has gained a lot of attention. The benefits of embracing DEI in a business and company have been proven over and over again. I think the same may hold true if we apply DEI to managing our health. Here are some of my thoughts.
Diversity in exercises:
Human genes have been evolving for thousands of years. To survive the harsh and dangerous environment, humans had to forage long distances to find fruit and vegetation. They also learned to chase animals to obtain protein. And sometimes, humans had to run extremely fast to avoid being chased by predators. These behaviors are basically the three exercises we do: endurance, aerobic, and anaerobic, to make our genes healthy and happy.
To build a healthy body, we also need to do strength and flexibility training, and build muscles in our upper body, core, and lower body. This is essential in carrying out our daily lives, and also important to allow us to have healthy aging in our senior years.
Equity in receiving health care:
To live a healthy life and be immune to diseases, we need access to modern medicines and health care providers. But we have huge inequities around the world, in different regions, and in different economic and social classes. Various governments and philanthropic organizations are attempting to close such gaps. But there is still a long way to go.
Inclusion in treatment methods:
Both traditional and modern science have their value in enhancing our wellness and curing our diseases. For example, more people are finding out the value of TaiChi, acupuncture, pilates, yoga, and some traditional medicine. Modern science and technology are allowing us to understand our bodies at much deeper and micro levels. Biomedical advances, robotic surgery, and AI assistance give us more options for treating diseases and restoring health. In addition, the linkage between mental and physical health is better understood and employed by health providers.
I hope that, by applying DEI, we all can live healthy long lives.

如今,DEI(多樣性、平等性和包容性) 的話題備受關注。
