151. How Has COVID-19 Changed You?
– Musings of Dr. Jamie C. Hsu, 8.13.2023
According to the World Health Organization, the pandemic is no longer a global health emergency. People are returning to their normal lives, students are going back to school, vacationers are booking trips, shops are reopening, restaurants are offering in-house dining, and workers are returning to their offices.
On the surface, things seem to be back to the normal pre-pandemic days, but in reality there have been significant changes — some temporary, and some permanent. How have you personally been changed? It may be time to assess and reflect on your work, career, family, and social life.
A good way to do such an assessment is to re-examine the 5 key success factors for career and life and see how you have been impacted and changed.
- Understand yourself: Extraverted and introverted people dealt with isolation, social distancing, and remote work very differently during COVID-19. For me, an extravert, I had to go to the mall, grocery store, and other places with people to get energized. What have you noticed about your personal traits?
- Appreciate human relations: We are all social creatures. Zoom meetings and social media connections can never satisfy our yearning for physical interaction: the joy of a hug, a friendly slap on the back, or a hearty laugh.
- Learn new skills: Online communication, digital commerce, time management, and remote learning are skills we needed to survive the pandemic. Have you become proficient in these and other new-age skills?
- Diverse knowledge: The pandemic heightened the need to integrate knowledge from many fields to find a cure. Remote work, online school, Coursera, and AI search engines gave us tremendous opportunities to acquire new knowledge more easily and more timely.
- Strong personal values: With so much uncertainty and the health threat, we became more aware of our fragility and vulnerability. How will you use what you have learned to create values for others and society?
With these key success factors, I hope you have been changed by COVID-19 for the better and become a stronger and more resilient person.
