– Musings of Dr. Jamie C. Hsu, 1.13.2023
With the easing of COVID restrictions, I have been able to travel and engage in some activities. This has given me new opportunities to experience the joy of various immersions.
Visual immersion in the art of Van Gogh: This laser and digitally created show surrounded us with huge paintings of Van Gogh. We were literally put into his paintings and surrounded by his color and brush strokes. This was unlike typical art shows when we were always the outside observers looking at the paintings. The immersive experience gave us a much better appreciation of the vivid colors and the details of the brushwork.
Physical immersion in the water: With the extra time available during COVID, I have rekindled my hobby of daily morning swimming. With every stroke and every kick, I can sense how my body is pushed forward, as the water flows around me. It is a soothing interaction between the water and me. This immersion in water gives me the sensation of a peaceful meditation.
Immersion in TV drama: One of the luxuries during the COVID lockdown was the extra leisure time. There were not many socialization or leisure activities taking place, which gave me the opportunity to watch some TV dramas on Netflix and Hulu. One of the popular Chinese shows, Nirvana in Fire (琅琊榜), caught my interest because of the many plots, infightings, and strategic maneuvers in the deep palace. The charismatic actors and actresses attracted me to watch all 58 episodes. With such a long and intimate exposure to the show, I felt like I knew all the characters and was living alongside them. Their fates and their experiences became part of my own. I felt that I knew them, and I was immersed in their lives during the 58 episodes. This is so different from watching a movie only as an outside observer.
Immersion in love: After the easing of travel restrictions, I spent a whole month in Taiwan visiting friends and families. Even after more than 3 years of separation, our bonds and reconnections were instant. The love and happiness we experienced was immediate and immense. Such total immersion in their love was heartwarming and gratifying. Time and distance have not put a dent in our love. The big hugs, warm greetings, and heart-melting smiles from business colleagues, long-time friends, and close family members, made me feel like I was immersed in the heaven of love.
I wish for all my readers to experience similar joy in their various immersions.
