141. On Leadership | 領導力

141. On Leadership | 領導力

– Musings of Dr. Jamie C. Hsu7.19.2022

In the last few years, I have taught a college course and a high school summer program on leadership. Furthermore, the topic of leadership seems to have received renewed interest by many Asian American community organizations. This is to promote and advance the professional careers, political power, and community influence of Asian Americans in the US. Here are some of my thoughts on leadership, in addition to what I have written in Blogs 113 and 115.

First of all, let’s define leadership. Here is how I have explained to students: “Leadership is the conviction and capability to influence a group of people to create value for business, society, environment, and mankind.” To achieve this goal of leadership, one must possess many critical skills. Some of the leadership skills are:

Envisioning: A leader must have the audacious vision to create something big and transformative that will benefit others and excite people.

Communicating: Being able to articulate the vision and explain it clearly and enthusiastically is a critical step in persuading and recruiting followers to join a cause or movement. A leader must be able to translate the “vision” into specific answers to the question “What is in it for me?”

Integrity and Conviction: The motive behind any action must be selfless and for the common good of a larger vision. Otherwise, people will see through you and your personal agenda very quickly and desert you.

Networking: No one can do everything by themselves. A diverse group of people and talents are essential to achieving great results. Knowing how to network and recruit a broad group of talents is another critical skill of leaders.

Synthesizing: Any high-caliber team will undoubtedly have different ideas and opinions on various subjects. A good leader must be able to synthesize these diverse inputs to create something bigger and better than the individual inputs.

Team Building: To make people forgo their individual idiosyncrasies and work as a harmonious team requires the leader’s constant effort to sense and remove any inherent friction between team members.

Empathy: To be a respected leader, one must have the ability and willingness to understand the needs and concerns of customers and employees. People will contribute if they feel you understand them and care about them.

Leadership skills are very deep both in science and art. To discuss and learn these skills in more depth, I am launching a “Leadership Circle” with like-minded community leaders. Hopefully, we’ll have interesting and valuable learnings to share with you in future blogs.
