135. Dress to Impress or Express |
– Musings of Dr. Jamie C. Hsu, 3.21.2022
As we emerge from the pandemic quarantines and Zoom screens, we are again presenting our total selves, from head to foot, to the world. After two years, the art of dressing may need some review and getting used to. In addition, dress codes and fashion have gone through some changes we may not be familiar with. During the pandemic, people worked at home and had fewer interactions with friends and colleagues. We were busy surviving the pandemic and adjusting to new ways of working and living. Most gatherings, parties, and events were replaced by virtual meetings online. We did not need to present our total selves. Casual wear became the accepted norm in how we dressed.
Now with the increased in-person social and business gatherings, it may be a good time to reflect on how we dress for various situations and what we are trying to achieve. Are we choosing our attire in order to impress or please others, to express our individual tastes and preferences, or to display a new style and our artistic creativity? Or maybe we are most comfortable just following the norms?
The choice in our dress should be a conscientious decision to set or enhance our individual image and brand. Some famous people can give us a clue: Steve Jobs’ black turtleneck, Lady Gaga’s flamboyant dress, Bill Gates’ shirt, and AGT Simon Cowell’s white T-shirt have undoubtedly helped them project different images to the public.
We can do the same as those famous people: dress to impress others or dress to project an image of reliability, dependability, creativity, humility, and other traits. After a two-year absence from the social and business scenes, now may be the perfect time and opportunity to recast ourselves.
It would be a fun exercise to select a few adjectives you wish others would use to describe you. And then check to see if you can and will dress accordingly to enhance that image. Have some after-dinner discussions with your family or friends about how you will dress to emerge from the pandemic hibernation.
Have fun!
